Quick and easy transfer of any Open Street Map to Garmin devices

While planing our Transalp trip next summer I discovered a new way to transfer maps to my 60CSX (that is usually mounted on the handlebar). Just install a Safari/Firefox Communicator plugin that can be downloaded from the Garmin website and select a frame by SHIFT/CLICK on a map region at Outdoor Navigators. Then boot the Garmin in USB storage mode, connect it to the Mac and

copy /Users/wjst/Garmin/GMAPSUPP.IMG to /GARMIN/GARMIN/GMAPSUPP.IMG

as the transfer does not work automatically. Do NOT overwrite any existing GMAPSUPP.IMG! That procedure is being very handy for small map areas.
For larger area (like the Alpes) I would recommend a download fromopenmtbmap.org and convert it to Garmin format – or use the ready made Alpes at mtbnavi.de who hosts not only the Garmin binary but also a Roadtrip version. BTW, additional hardcopy maps are a must, as I always want a printed maps on the road; batteries will fail, a device may crash …
