With the (rather intransparent) perl installation procedure, your question is difficult to answer. I think there were still some dependencies in the queue that finally resolved. Be 100% sure that your GD from http://www.libgd.org/DOC_INSTALL_OSX is working before running the cpan>install GD. Good luck.
