Motion Blur

Sometimes wanted, sometimes avoided: a balanced motion blur is always difficult to achieve and needs a lot of experience to look great. I have been working on tables for my different lenses, various distances and speed of my objects. There are, however, so many problems, even in defining sharpness, that I have nearly given up to find the magic formula.

Just recently, however, I discovered a technical essay from Guido Krüger about “Bewegungsunschärfe”. It is a sound technical paper that is using sharpness classes to predict motion blur.

It is written in German, but the research result can be summarized easily alson in English: “Just make an estimate how many seconds the object takes to travel through your frame and multiple this with 1/1000 s”.

My initial results using that formula are very promising. I am even using a stopwatch app now for an exact estimate, TBC.
