The Godox is the first serious portable bare bulb flash that can even do high speed sync. Unfortunately there isn’t so much information out about the Nikon support there since the Cells II N trigger has been released a few weeks ago.
So I had to buy one rather blindly in addition to my existing Godox FT-16 transmitter. I can confirm that high speed sync works on a D4 up to 1/8000s but there are several glitches that haven’t been reported so far:
* HSS needs to be always set directly directly on the flash by pressing “Mode” and “Set” together. No chance to do this remotely!
* After setting HSS on the flash, there are only 3 power levels available: 1/4, 1/2, 1/1. The FT-16 transmitter can NO more change power level remotely.
* Recharge time is heavily increased in HSS mode, about 2.1s at 1/4 power and 4.6s at full power.
* The external flash meter does not work anymore correctly (which is not unexpected).
* FT-16 and Cells II-N triggers do not communicate with each other despite the fact that the Cells II-N has a camera slave setting. Obviously you need 2 Cell II-N for triggering the camera.
Taken together the Cell II-N is a nice tool if you need HSS but do not expect any major integration into your existing setup.
