But that may not be true according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nngroup.com\/articles\/computer-skill-levels\/\"><span class=\"company-name\">Nielsen\u00a0<em>Norman<\/em>\u00a0Group<\/span><\/a>. They summarize the results of any OECD survery where 215,942 people were tested, with at least 5,000 participants in most countries.<\/p>\n<p><em>26% of adult population<\/em><br \/>\ncan\u2019t switch on Computers<\/p>\n<p><em>14% &#8211; <\/em><strong>Below Level 1<\/strong><br \/>\nBeing too polite to use a term like \u201clevel zero,\u201d the OECD researchers refer to the lowest skill level as \u201cbelow level 1.\u201d<br \/>\nThis is what people below level 1 can do: \u201cTasks are based on well-defined problems involving the use of only one function within a generic interface\u201d.\u00a0 An example of task at this level is \u201cdelete this email message\u201d in an email app.<\/p>\n<p><em>29% &#8211; <\/em><strong>Level 1<\/strong><br \/>\nThis is what level-1 people can do: \u201cTasks typically require the use of widely available and familiar technology applications, such as email software or a web browser. &#8221; An example of level-1 task is \u201cFind all emails from John Smith.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>26% &#8211; <\/em><strong>Level 2<\/strong><br \/>\nThis is what level-2 people can do: \u201cAt this level, tasks typically require the use of both generic and more specific technology applications.&#8221; An example of level-2 task is \u201cYou want to find a specific document that was sent to you by John Smith in October last year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>5% &#8211; <\/em><strong>Level 3<\/strong><br \/>\nThis is what this most-skilled group of people can do: \u201cAt this level, tasks typically require the use of both generic and more specific technology applications.\u201d An example of level-3 task is \u201cYou want to know what percentage of the emails sent by John Smith last month were about a specific topic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"bottom-note\">\n  <span class=\"mod1\">CC-BY-NC Science Surf , accessed 13.04.2026<\/span>\n <\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We usually assume &#8211; even in science &#8211; that many if not all have high computer level skills.
