{"id":14526,"date":"2019-12-03T19:16:34","date_gmt":"2019-12-03T19:16:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wjst.de\/blog\/?p=14526"},"modified":"2020-01-20T16:24:19","modified_gmt":"2020-01-20T16:24:19","slug":"johan-rockstrom-talking-about-tipping-points","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wjst.de\/blog\/sciencesurf\/2019\/12\/johan-rockstrom-talking-about-tipping-points\/","title":{"rendered":"Johan Rockstr\u00f6m talking about tipping points"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week I had the opportunity to attend a lecture by Johann Rockstr\u00f6m explaining his most recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-019-03595-0\">Nature commentary about tipping points<\/a> &#8220;too risky to\u00a0 bet against&#8221;.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) introduced the idea of tipping points two decades ago. At that time, these \u2018large-scale discontinuities\u2019 in the climate system were considered likely only if global warming exceeded 5\u2009\u00b0C above pre-industrial levels. There is a thick ice sheet of about 3 km which forms one of the three major ice-drainage basins of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. And the ice is melting rapidly &#8211; with the tipping point having been passed in 1996.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-latin-america-49971563\">Amazon is burning right now<\/a> \u2014 the world\u2019s largest rainforest.
