{"id":14659,"date":"2019-12-11T15:59:30","date_gmt":"2019-12-11T15:59:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wjst.de\/blog\/?p=14659"},"modified":"2020-01-08T06:38:41","modified_gmt":"2020-01-08T06:38:41","slug":"what-is-a-predatory-journal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wjst.de\/blog\/sciencesurf\/2019\/12\/what-is-a-predatory-journal\/","title":{"rendered":"What is a predatory journal?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-019-03759-y\">Nature<\/a> reports a new definition for predatory journals<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Predatory journals and publishers are entities that prioritize self-interest at the expense of scholarship and are characterized by false or misleading information, deviation from best editorial and publication practices, a lack of transparency, and\/or the use of aggressive and indiscriminate solicitation practices.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This definition is much broader than I would have expected.<\/p>\n<p>Smaller scientific societies prioritize of course their self-interest and even middle and top tier journals occasionally provide misleading information.<\/p>\n<p>There is also a lack of transparency whenever an anonymous referee or editor decides on your paper without any explanation (or justification (as happened to me this morning. &#8220;Lack of space&#8221; is ridiculous in the internet age).<\/p>\n<p>So what is a predatory journal? I can&#8217;t put the answer into one sentence without annoying also serious journals.<\/p>\n<p>And there is already some considerable literature on the inner workings of true predatory journals.
