{"id":1517,"date":"2008-04-12T09:28:16","date_gmt":"2008-04-12T07:28:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wjst.de\/blog\/?p=1517"},"modified":"2009-05-20T21:44:05","modified_gmt":"2009-05-20T19:44:05","slug":"to-be-honest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wjst.de\/blog\/sciencesurf\/2008\/04\/to-be-honest\/","title":{"rendered":"To be honest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bruce Alberts, the new editor-in-chief of Science magazine, has in his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/cgi\/content\/summary\/319\/5870\/1589\">March, 21 editorial<\/a> a nice comment that I would like to highlight here<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nScientists share a common way of reaching conclusions that is based not only on the evidence and logic, but also requires honesty, creativity, and openess to new ideas.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Struggling in an area where no (or only seldom) conclusions ar being reached, I agree<!--more--> with Alberts that there are massive problems with an insufficient education. Evidence and logic need to be taught in classes of science philosopy &#8211; the theoretical aspect &#8211; and need to be trained in literature seminars &#8211; the practical experience.<br \/>\nFailure to reach conclusions, however, is often caused by lacking honesty. This is not a story about faking data, but about putting the focus on impact, publishable units, dropping outliers and downsizing unexpected outcomes. To be honest, much science is not honest.<\/p>\n<h3>Addendum<\/h3>\n<p>I forgot a reference to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wjst.de\/blog\/2006\/08\/13\/revised-nylenna-simonsen-misconduct-diagram\/\">Nylenna-Simonsen Misconduct Diagram<\/a>.
