{"id":17319,"date":"2020-10-09T05:35:25","date_gmt":"2020-10-09T05:35:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wjst.de\/blog\/?p=17319"},"modified":"2021-10-07T03:57:17","modified_gmt":"2021-10-07T03:57:17","slug":"the-nobel-prize-violates-a-central-paradigm-of-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wjst.de\/blog\/sciencesurf\/2020\/10\/the-nobel-prize-violates-a-central-paradigm-of-science\/","title":{"rendered":"The Nobel Prize violates a central paradigm of science"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With the current hype around prize winners, we may not forget about the much larger number of scientists who have been never honored or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ignaz_Semmelweis\">even lost their live<\/a> for doing good science.<\/p>\n<p>The Nobel Prize violates a central paradigm of science that false opinions are always corrected, see also the summary at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nobel_Prize_controversies\">https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nobel_Prize_controversies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So this is not so much about the recent scandal around the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paolo_Macchiarini#Research_misconduct\">secretary of the Nobel Committee for Physiology or Medicine, Urban Lendahl<\/a>, who resigned due to the Macchiarini scandal.<\/p>\n<p>Or about the recent Astra Zeneca money <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aerzteblatt.de\/archiv\/62882\/Interview-mit-Prof-Dr-med-Harald-zur-Hausen-Medizin-Nobelpreistraeger-2008-Es-ist-meine-Pflicht-die-Impfung-zu-empfehlen\">behind the nomination of Harald zur Hausen<\/a>. I am thinking here about cruel treatments for example<\/p>\n<p>1927 &#8220;for the discovery of the therapeutic value of malaria inoculation in the treatment of dementia paralytica&#8221; to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Julius_Wagner-Jauregg\">Julius Wagner-Jauregg<\/a><\/p>\n<p>1949 to Portuguese neurologist <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ant%C3%B3nio_Egas_Moniz\">Ant\u00f3nio Egas Moniz<\/a> &#8220;for the discovery of the therapeutic value of leucotomy (lobotomy) in certain psychoses&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The refrain is a familiar one that there are no isolated geniuses but (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/science\/archive\/2017\/10\/the-absurdity-of-the-nobel-prizes-in-science\/541863\/?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=share\">Atlantic<\/a>), it<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>reinforces a flawed reward system in science in which the winner takes all, and the contributions of the many are neglected by disproportionate attention to the contributions of a few.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"bottom-note\">\n  <span class=\"mod1\">CC-BY-NC Science Surf , accessed 20.04.2026<\/span>\n <\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With the current hype around prize winners, we may not forget about the much larger number of scientists who have been never honored or even lost their live for doing good science.
