{"id":18667,"date":"2021-10-28T07:51:50","date_gmt":"2021-10-28T05:51:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wjst.de\/blog\/?p=18667"},"modified":"2025-01-18T09:44:54","modified_gmt":"2025-01-18T07:44:54","slug":"vitamin-d-kids-asthma-study-criticism-is-not-justified","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wjst.de\/blog\/sciencesurf\/2021\/10\/vitamin-d-kids-asthma-study-criticism-is-not-justified\/","title":{"rendered":"Vitamin D Kids Asthma Study &#8211; Criticism is not justified"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Aug 12,\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/critics-say-childhood-asthma-study-unethically-withheld-care-and-see-troubling-trend\">Science magazine<\/a> published a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cpiller\/status\/1426199338649219077\">strange journalistic article<\/a> about an ongoing vitamin D asthma study.\u00a0 I responded <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/science_surf\/status\/1426145394518630400\">on the next day <\/a>while also the former editor-in-chief of Science <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jeremymberg\/status\/1453373631665483794\">Jeremy Berg<\/a> noted<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-24525\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wjst.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Bildschirmfoto-2025-01-18-um-07.33.20.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"495\" height=\"199\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Science Mag then printed also a longer<a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.abm4776\"> rebuttal of Dr. Berg<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div role=\"paragraph\">Piller minimizes the rationale used to select the placebo-controlled trial design and suggests that there is agreement that such a design is unethical&#8230; The News story notes that the majority of children in the trial were Black and states that this constitutes overrepresentation&#8230; Rather than being criticized, this trial should be commended for inclusion of appropriate trial participants&#8230;. Piller writes that participants were at increased risk of fractures and that the nine bone fractures experienced by study participants were more than anticipated, without specifying the magnitude of any increased risk or the anticipated number of fractures. However, there is no consensus that any increased risk exists&#8230;<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div role=\"paragraph\">as well as the response of Dr. Celedon in the same issue<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div role=\"paragraph\"><\/div>\n<div role=\"paragraph\">Piller misrepresents the Vitamin D Kids Asthma Study (\u201cVit-D-Kids\u201d or \u201cVDKA\u201d) . He reports concerns about the study\u2019s design, participant safety and selection, consent forms, and report trans-parency. These doubts are unfounded. VDKA ethically investigated a potentially important treatment for childhood asthma.<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Unfortunately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.abm7030\">the concluding statement of the news editor Tim Appenzeller<\/a> is so much out of this world that I would recommend to search now not only for another news correspondent but also another news editor.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Edit 18 Jan 2025<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Please read also the new Medium <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@jeremymberg\/the-importance-of-careful-use-of-comparative-terms-in-quantitative-arguments-in-science-journalism-4c95e75c7729\">article\u00a0<\/a>by Dr Berg and the medRxiv <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medrxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2023.07.24.23293100v1\">article<\/a> by Dr Celedon.<\/li>\n<li>For whatever reason the story surfaced again yesterday at <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/jeremymberg.bsky.social\/post\/3lfx3hskh7226\">Bluesky<\/a>. For posteriority <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wjst.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Skyview.pdf\">here is an unrolled thread<\/a> with some interesting new details by Dr. Berg.<\/li>\n<li>Unfortunately some Twitter links expired recently but the links to the printed Science paper are still correct.<\/li>\n<li>This is one of the most unfair attacks of a dubious science journalist on a reputable scientist.<\/li>\n<li>I know Dr Celedon for several decades and although I never agreed on his opinion on high vitamin D demand in newborns, this discussion was always fair and on a high academic level.<\/li>\n<li>The motivation of Piller is unclear.
