The accuracy and predictability of a hypothesis depend on the validity of the inputs used to generate and test it. Because problems are typically complex and information regarding their solution is limited, the solution is more likely to be found if the information base is greater. This rationale is a driving force behind systems biology, which attempts to define biological complexity from a systemic perspective using information technology … High-profile journals publish systems biology studies, including the human genome sequence, but most papers focus on hypothesis-driven investigations.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The most remarkable point here is the fact that there are still more people who believe in an underlying truth. This reminds me to the philosopher Jaspers<\/a> who once wrote<\/p>\n

\nWissenschaften leisten auch heute Au\u00dferordentliches. Die exakten Naturwissenschaften haben einen aufregenden Gang rapider Fortschritte in Grundgedanken und empirischen Ergebnissen begonnen. Ein über die Welt verbreiteter Kreis der Forscher steht in den Beziehungen des rationalen Sichverstehens. Einer wirft dem anderen den Ball zu. Dieser Vorgang findet Widerhall in der Masse durch die Handgreiflichkeit der Resultate. Das sachnahe Sehen in den Geisteswissenschaften hat sich zu mikroskopischer Feinheit gesteigert. Ein nie dagewesener Reichtum an Dokumenten und Monumenten ist vor Augen gebracht. Kritische Sicherheit ist erreicht.
\nDoch hat weder das stürmische Voranschreiten der Naturwissenschaften noch die Stofferweiterung der Geisteswissenschaften hindern k\u00f6nnen, da\u00df der Zweifel an der Wissenschaft überhaupt w\u00e4chst. Die Naturwissenschaften bleiben ohne Totalit\u00e4t einer Anschauung; trotz ihrer gro\u00dfen Vereinheitlichungen wirken ihre heutigen Grundgedanken eher wie Rezepte, mit denen man es versucht, denn als Wahrheit, die endgültig erobert wird.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

These simple recipes by experimentalists have been noted more than 50 years ago. Are we overcoming this obstacles now by systems biology? There is a good chance if systems biology is not drowning in arbitrariness.<\/p>\n\n
