{"id":539,"date":"2006-12-30T13:05:57","date_gmt":"2006-12-30T13:05:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wjst.de\/blog\/2006\/12\/30\/innate-immunity-is-species-individual-organ-specific\/"},"modified":"2019-07-08T13:10:53","modified_gmt":"2019-07-08T13:10:53","slug":"innate-immunity-is-species-individual-organ-specific","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wjst.de\/blog\/sciencesurf\/2006\/12\/innate-immunity-is-species-individual-organ-specific\/","title":{"rendered":"Innate immunity is species-, individual, organ-specific"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a previous <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clinicalmolecularallergy.com\/content\/3\/1\/7\">paper<\/a> I have questioned if LPS<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nnanogram exposure on the pulmonary epithelium will supersede the gram-wise exposure on the gut mucosa.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This may indeed work as now shown by Eyal Raz in a commentary in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/ni\/journal\/v8\/n1\/abs\/ni0107-3.html\">Nature Immunology<\/a> where previous TLR studies <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\ntypically reproduce the splenic version of innate immunity (the spleen is used here as a metaphor for the sterile internal environment).\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the lung only the alveolar space is thought to be sterile while macrophages should not be in a constant state of activation (as inflammation would compromise gas exchange).<\/p>\n<p>There are now several indicators for a lung-specific regulation of innate immunity: TLR9 is expressed in human plasmacytoid dendritic cells while TLR4 is only on myeloid DCs; TGFB-\u00df mediated crosstalk between alveolar macrophages and epithelial cells seems to be unique in the lung; in addition indeolamine induction or surfactant production is not found elsewhere.
