{"id":7275,"date":"2014-11-07T12:15:53","date_gmt":"2014-11-07T11:15:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wjst.de\/blog\/?p=7275"},"modified":"2014-11-07T13:01:00","modified_gmt":"2014-11-07T12:01:00","slug":"premature-epiphysis-closure-by-high-vitamin-d-supplementation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wjst.de\/blog\/sciencesurf\/2014\/11\/premature-epiphysis-closure-by-high-vitamin-d-supplementation\/","title":{"rendered":"Premature epiphysis closure by high vitamin D supplementation?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Having been asked this question, I was only aware of the fact that premature epiphysis closure\u00a0is\u00a0a side effect of isotretinoin therapy in children (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jaad.org\/article\/S0190-9622(07)01629-5\/abstract\">Tran 2008<\/a>).<br \/>\nWhile DELAYED\u00a0epiphysis closure is known for rickets, it is an interesting question if vitamin D supplements given to adolescents will be leading to a premature end of longitudinal growth.\u00a0Maybe this is\u00a0also a difficult question as the answer will depend on long-time vitamin D, calcium and phosphate status; it will depend on dose and application scheme of any vitamin D supplement. And it will depend to some extent on\u00a0the genetically determined vitamin D hydroxylase activity.\u00a0The ultimate textbook (<a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.de\/books?id=w7hMAFmsM84C&amp;pg=PA887&amp;lpg=PA887&amp;dq=Premature+epiphysis+closure+by+high+vitamin+D&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=Ap8Wip7AhM&amp;sig=ACBSbeN5b2hX_dss1MhLlRs9FdY&amp;hl=de&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=CK1cVL68NIOXOJ3xgKgB&amp;ved=0CC4Q6AEwAzgK#v=onepage&amp;q=Premature%20epiphysis%20closure%20by%20high%20vitamin%20D&amp;f=false\">Feldman, Vitamin D, p864<\/a>) writes<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>With treatment the unmineralized osteoid of the growth plate of the metaphysics ad epiphysis will mineralize.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is in line with original research in rats (<a href=\"http:\/\/jn.nutrition.org\/content\/108\/12\/1899.full.pdf\">Boris 1978<\/a>) showing<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The results &#8230;\u00a0indicate that the administration of la,25-(OH)2-D3\u00a0during the recovery period after EHDP\u00a0administration significantly improved the uptake of 5Ca by the epiphyseal plate\u00a0while reducing the plate width.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>and probably also in calves ( <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9179748\">Woddard 1997<\/a> ) although that study also included vitamin A.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This study showed that vitamin A induced growth-plate closure if calves were given an intramuscular injection of vitamins A and D (2,000,000 IU and 300,000 IU, respectively) on the first day after birth<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So we need to\u00a0ask first\u00a0if an adolescent gets additional\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/211.144.68.84:9998\/91keshi\/Public\/File\/14\/79-3\/pdf\/1-s2.0-S1297319X11002739-main.pdf\">vitamin A for acne treatment<\/a>.\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">For vitamin D supplementation, the case is rather\u00a0unlikely at the moment..\u00a0The only intervention study that I know of\u00a0(<\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5;\" href=\"http:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007%2Fs00774-014-0579-5\">Morandi 2014<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">) missed some important aspects by focusing only on &#8220;growing pain&#8221;. \u00a0As we now have the possibility of doing PET scans of the epiphysis, it would be a good research question to be safe with vitamin Du supplementation of adolescents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"bottom-note\">\n  <span class=\"mod1\">CC-BY-NC Science Surf , accessed 20.04.2026<\/span>\n <\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Having been asked this question, I was only aware of the fact that premature epiphysis closure\u00a0is\u00a0a side effect of isotretinoin therapy in children (Tran 2008).
