According to grantome<\/a>\u00a0VDAART started\u00a0back in 2007 and ended in 2014 (the clinicaltrials.gov listing of 2009-2019 seems\u00a0to be wrong). \u00a0The VDAART trial report at least was reported “to be under review” according to \u00a0the\u00a0Resp Lancet from Dec 2015<\/a>.<\/p>\n Anyway there is a new report from\u00a0a British trial<\/a>\u00a0by Griffiths et al. as published on Dec, 23:<\/p>\n In an ethnically stratified randomised controlled trial conducted at St Mary’s Hospital London, 180 women at 27 weeks gestation were allocated to no Vitamin D, 800 IU ergocalciferol daily until delivery, or a single oral bolus of 200,000 IU cholecalciferol.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Table 8\u00a0shows a\u00a03 – 4 fold significantly increased risk for asthma and eczema (medication) during the first 3 years following supplementation during pregnancy. \u00a0Unfortunately, the authors do not\u00a0report\u00a0this result\u00a0in\u00a0the abstract \u00a0–\u00a0“what is not allowed cannot happen”…<\/p>\n There is also a new Australian trial\u00a0underway (VITALITY<\/a>\u00a0–\u00a0other early intervention studies are CORK<\/a>, ABCVitaminD<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0VIDI <\/a>totalling\u00a0to 5 ongoing RCTs).<\/p>\n The VITALITY study protocol reads very much like a\u00a0protocol that I have submitted to the BMBF some 7 years ago. There is only one major difference: I wanted to show the risks of vitamin D supplementation while\u00a0funding had been\u00a0declined<\/a> for being “unethical” research.<\/p>\n In contrast, the VITALITY\u00a0authors believe that supplementation will reduce the risk of allergic disease and are therefore\u00a0in\u00a0a much better condition to get a study funded. In the end, however, only results will count. It may even be a benefit if you don’t know so much. Of course there are clinical trials like Guy des Montis 1993<\/a> or Norizoe 2014<\/a>\u00a0that show a risk of allergic sensitization by vitamin D.<\/p>\n\n <\/p>\n Are there any\u00a0news in the allergy & vitamin D controversy? Unfortunately there are still no results from VDAART study on early vitamin D effects – even after so many years (and expenses of \u00a0>10M $).
