There was a congress abstract earlier this year by\u00a0Rachid, Rima A et al. in \u00a0<\/span><\/a>Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology:\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0“Food Allergy in Infancy Is Associated with Dysbiosis of the Intestinal Microbiota” where\u00a0137 infants (52 food-allergic and 85 controls) were enrolled\u00a0and\u00a0differences in fecal microbiota tested between the 2 groups. Food-allergic babies at 1-6 months of age had\u00a0decreased abundances of genera in Bacteroidetes (Parabacteroides and Alistipes).<\/p>\n

Interestingly, a new\u00a0genome-wide association study<\/a> of the gut microbiota using two cohorts from Northern Germany identified genome-wide significant associations for microbial variation and individual taxa at multiple genetic loci, including the VDR gene. \u00a0To further explore this association, they\u00a0analyzed gut microbiota data fin Vdr\u2212\/\u2212 mice, confirming that loss of Vdr in mice substantially affects diversity. A more\u00a0detailed exploration also showed that VDR consistently influences individual bacterial taxa such as Parabacteroides.<\/p>\n

So, is this a missing link?-Can vitamin D supplementation<\/a> influence the gut microbial flora? This\u00a0could explain even other observations.<\/a>\u00a0Right now\u00a0rs7974353<\/a>\u00a0is a rare human intronic SNP with no disease annotation.<\/p>\n
