When digitizing old slides, I found these interesting ones &#8211; they show the large ward at the hospital at <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beaune\">Beaune<\/a> in the Bourgogne. The hospices de Beaune were founded in 1442 by Nicolas Rolin. A <a href=\"http:\/\/w210.ub.uni-tuebingen.de\/dbt\/volltexte\/2003\/737\/pdf\/Stiftung.pdf\">M.A. thesis<\/a> at the university of T&uuml;bingen has more details &#8211; charity as part of the social status (page 26) and a reason why the initials of Nicolas Rolin (and his third wife) <!--more-->can be found all over the place. Central to the sickroom was a polyptichon of the Last Judgement as a symbol of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.websters-online-dictionary.org\/fl\/fleeting.html\">fugacious life<\/a>. Already Hippocrates knew that &#8220;Life is short, art long, opportunity fleeting, experience treacherous, judgment difficult&#8221; &#8211; facts that clinical medicine today more and more ignores.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wjst.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/04\/img001537.jpg\" title='' data-rel=\"key-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img src='https:\/\/www.wjst.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/04\/img001537.thumbnail.jpg' alt='img001537.jpg' \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wjst.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/04\/img001538.jpg\" title='' data-rel=\"key-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img src='https:\/\/www.wjst.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/04\/img001538.thumbnail.jpg' alt='img001538.jpg' \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A contemporary portrayal of the <em>grande salle<\/em> is at <a href=\"http:\/\/mistral.culture.fr\/public\/mistral\/joconde_fr?ACTION=CHERCHER&#038;FIELD_98=REPR&#038;VALUE_98=%20Beaune&#038;DOM=All&#038;REL_SPECIFIC=1\">culture.fr<\/a>. Rich and aristocratic people had smaller rooms and there was an extra room for moribund patients. The nurses themselves had a sleeping room with 8 beds in the second floor. They should be at least 18 years and not older than 30 years; they were allowed personal belongings but could leave the hospital only two by two<br \/>\nWhen starting in a surgery clinic in 1978 we still had large septical wards.
