Prerelease: A universal study database engine

Last night I completed the prerelase of a new database engine that may be used both for online and offline collection of interview data and laboratory values. The central database can deliver pages to the internet but may be at the same time accessed by Open Office to create nicely formatted printed questionnaires.
The system is easy to set up by just copying 2 packages to a directory. It supports data collection at multiple sites (with SSL) and works both with Firefox and IE.
Report functions for single individuals and for study center have been largely reconstructed while the engine remains ultrafast by an innovative database design, by using pure JAVA byte code of the embedded server and by restricting to text output. The current version includes also a web-based edit of variables and a script for regular backups.
