Reality distortion field (RDF) is a term first used by Bud Tribble at Apple Computer in 1981, to describe company co-founder Steve Jobs’ charisma and its effects on the developers working on the Macintosh project.

Mag sein, daß man nur zu Höchstleistungen kommt wenn man ständig versucht die Grenzen zu verschieben im Sinn es eines “Reality Extension Field”. Man kann es allerdings auch überreizen und tief fallen, so das Geständnis in dem aktuellen Stadler Prozess

People's capacity to think rationally

When we think of a pandemic, we often conjure images of deadly infectious diseases that spread rapidly across countries causing unimaginable human suffering (like the Black Death, the Spanish influenza, AIDS, or the ongoing COVID-19 crisis). The West is currently suffering from such a devastating pandemic, a collective malady that destroys people's capacity to think rationally.

I posit that freedom of speech, the scientific
method, intellectual diversity, and a meritocratic ethos rooted in individual dignity rather than adherence to the ideology of Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity (DIE) are nonnegotiable elements of a truly enlightened society. A fair society ensures that its members have equality of opportunities and not equality of outcomes as mandated by DIE edicts ... several anti-science, anti-reason, and illiberal idea pathogens including postmodernism, radical feminism, and transgender activism. These idea pathogens destroy our understanding of reality ... the mindset of social justice warriors gave rise to universities that prioritize minimizing hurt feelings over pursuing.

Whistleblower update

Der Schutz von Whistleblower sollte eigentlich nach Willen der EU besser werden. Aber nach unendlichen Verzögerungen, zuletzt vor dem Vermittlungsausschuss des Bundestages, ist es damit nicht weit her, wenn nicht mal mehr anonyme Hinweise möglich sind. Einziger Trost: auch woanders nur"talk, no action".
So wird das deutsche Gesetz wohl bald wieder einkassiert werden, das meint nicht nur Transparency Deutschland

Leider muss man in aller Deutlichkeit sagen: Der vorliegende Gesetzentwurf zum Schutz von Hinweisgeber:innen ist ein Fiasko. Die Bundesregierung muss dringend nachbessern, denn in der vorliegenden Form brächte das Gesetz neue Rechtsunsicherheiten für Whistleblower:innen, Unternehmen und Behörden. Anstatt den klaren Vorgaben und Empfehlungen der EU zu folgen, hat die Bundesregierung Stückwerk vorgelegt.

While I came across this program only in the He Jiankui case the NIH director is writing now about the Chinese talent recruitment program

Many NIH cases of grant policy violations involve activities in China and scientists of Chinese origin, raising concerns about racial, ethnic, or political targeting. The disproportionate share may be related to the extensive reach of Chinese talent recruitment programs, which explicitly state preferences for ethnic Chinese scientists. NIH compliance reviews abide by the same procedures for all scientists irrespective of their demographics, and the inquiries include cases involving countries other than China.

while we should not blame the Chinese culture but individual behaviour.

An update on the asthma exome

Here is a quick update on some genes of my recent asthma exome paper coming now from the 1 M exome paper published yesterday as a preprint.

Also ClinVar shows that the IL33 receptor is not “essential” making anti IL33 receptor antibodies like etokimab, itepekimab, tozorakimab a safe therapy although not being effective in any LOF mutation carrier.

The most interesting thing in the preprint is in supplemental table 2 with the s-het values for 16,704 genes. From that table I have selected my favorite target IL33 receptor together with TLR1, ALOX15, GSDMA, IL13 and IKZF3 ( BTNL2 could not be found in the list).

IKZF3 would be dangerous to be touched (see my 2008 commentary) while in the 2022 exome paper I also found only protective variants in the 5′-UTR but not any LOF variant – probably as IKZF3 is the only essential gene in the list.

So what's next? I am still thinking how to reduce my exome set to the causal variants as half of the mutations are probably LD artefacts. And well, it would be super interesting to examine now two extreme inbred populations for their mutation spectrum, loosing either asthma variants by healthy (Amish) or diseased founders (Tristan da Cunha). Unfortunately there is little hope that this will happen – current science is built more on competition than collaboration.

Die Kernprobleme der Wissenschaft in Deutschland III: Ende der Unbefristung

Unbefristung / Tenure einer Arbeitsstelle heisst nicht, daß der Arbeitgeber einen Arbeitnehmer bis zur Rente (oder darüber hinaus) arbeiten lässt. Das ist weder in Deutschland noch in Amerika so. Emeriti an deutschen Universitäten können allerdings wie in Amerika weiter arbeiten, da sie nur entpflichtet werden. Angestellte an Großforschungszentren gehen dagegen mit dem Ruhestand leer aus und verlieren Rechte an Büro, Labor und Bibliothek, sehr wenige Ausnahmen abgesehen.

Und nicht nur das – zunehmend ist Tenure in der Wissenschaft bedroht. So wurde etwa an der University Wisconsin 2015 (conversation) das 100 Jahre alte Recht auf Unbefristung eingeschränkt mit fatalen Folgen (slate). Weitere Eskalationsstufe sind aus England 2021 mit “Stock out” (Focus) oder 2022 in Texas (CNN) bekannt geworden.

2023 ist der Eingriff in die Wissenschaftsfreiheit in Deutschland angekommen. Nach einer Finanzkrise des Managements [1, 2, 3] wurde 2023 am Helmholtz Zentrum München erstmals “betriebsbedingt” gekündigt. Bei persönlichen Konflikten gab es hier auch schon früher Kündigungen, die Beendigung einer unbefristeten Arbeitsgruppenleiterstelle wegen Restrukturierung ist allerdings ein Novum in der deutschen Forschungslandschaft.

Die Kernprobleme der Wissenschaft in Deutschland II: Themenwahl

Die Art und Weise, wie wir Forschungsthemen auswählen und fördern, stammt im Prinzip aus den Zeiten der Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gesellschaft, und so wie Produkte irgendwann am Ende ihres Lebenszyklus' ankommen, ist diese Forschungsförderung jetzt organisatorisch auch am Ende. Jeder, wirklich jeder in diesem Wissenschaftsbetrieb beklagt eine überbordende Bürokratisierung, und über die vergangenen paar Jahre sehen wir dann auch noch, dass die Förderwahrscheinlichkeit in vielen Programmen aufgrund dessen zurückgegangen ist. Bei einzelnen Projektaufrufen in Programmen wie Horizon2020 lag die finale Erfolgsquote bei Anträgen nur noch bei drei Prozent. Das bedeutet, dass 97 Prozent der Mühen und der Arbeit von Antragstellern, aber auch von Gutachtern und Programmorganisatoren, einfach weggeworfen werden. Ich glaube, wir brauchen da disruptive Änderungen: Wir müssen uns hinsetzen und überlegen, wie Förderprozesse im 21. Jahrhundert entbürokratisiert werden können.
