Mozart over Beethoven

Mozart over Beethoven.
Wide over narrow.
Intelligence over beauty.
Grace over judgement.
Rough over smooth.
Night over day.
Water over wine.
Paper over screen.
Pictures over Words.
Heat over cold.
Belief over belief.
Mountains over beach.
Stars over sun.
Jesus over religion.
Silence over noise.
Straight over bow.
Love over everything.

Collison forces during distance running

Finally, a really important paper (at least for me ;-)

Here we show that habitually barefoot endurance runners often land on the fore-foot (fore-foot strike) before bringing down the heel, but they sometimes land with a flat foot (mid-foot strike) or, less often, on the heel (rear-foot strike).

The forefoot has lower collision forces! while the forces are excessive according to an earlier study. These new studies support the recent development of a running shoes (currently under development in Magdeburg) with no heel Continue reading Collison forces during distance running

Tear Down the Walls

What happens when looking at that video?

The neuroanatomy view this week in Nature

we predict[…] a macroscopic signal visible to functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in humans. We then looked for this signal as participants explored a virtual reality environment, mimicking the rats’ foraging task: fMRI activation and adaptation showing a speed-modulated six-fold rotational symmetry in running direction. The signal was found in a network of entorhinal/subicular, posterior and medial parietal, lateral temporal and medial prefrontal areas. Continue reading Tear Down the Walls

Being young

Youth is not a period of life. It’s a state of the spirit, it’s the product of a will. A quality of the imagination and an emotional intensity, it’s the victory of courage over shyness, of adventure over comfort. One doesn’t grow older for having lived a number of years. One gets older for having deserted an ideal. Continue reading Being young

People are, in a sense, on stage

— a quote of a new FM article entitled “Looking for you” that sees blogs as a form fo self-presentation on the internet (blogs btw show a dramatic increase of 1,4 new blogs every second worldwide). I haven’t seen blogging activity so much as Continue reading People are, in a sense, on stage

Why some women look young for their age

Here is my bit for the Ig Nobel – that piece that has just been published at PLoS ONE:

We studied the facial appearance of 102 pairs of female Danish twins aged 59 to 81 as well as 162 British females aged 45 to 75. Continue reading Why some women look young for their age
