Any free DNA kits by 23andme? No, bioprospecting

The Atlantic knows

23andMe is best known for selling DNA test kits, but the company’s real value lies in the data of its 5 million customers. The bigger its genetic database, the more insights 23andMe can glean from DNA. That, in turn, means the more it can tell customers about their ancestry and health and the more valuable the data it shares with academic scientists and sells to pharmaceutical companies for research. About 80 percent of 23andMe customers choose to participate in such research.

In human genomics, there has been a push to ensure that research on samples collected in developing countries — particularly in Africa — is anchored in local science and community engagement. One example of this is the Human Heredity and Health in Africa (H3Africa) initiative, which is funded by the US National Institutes of Health and the London-based Wellcome Trust. Since 2012, it has funded genomics projects whose principal investigators are African, with several of the projects being managed locally from Kenya’s capital, Nairobi.

The not so noble Nobel prize

Is the Nobel Prize a major influential factor in scientific progress? We believe it is not. Nobel laureates are recognized for work done 10, 20 or even 30 years ago, when the investigator(s) did not know their research would have a Nobel Prize worthy impact. Consequently, the work would have been done anyway. Winning a Nobel Prize is not the same as receiving any other award, and the sole beneficiary is the winner. Nobel laureates become instant celebrities; universally perceived as extremely smart and extraordinarily creative. They become “immortal” (whatever that means), are treated with the utmost respect and offered positions on prestigious boards in industry and government. They also secure a full-page obituary in both Nature and Science magazines.

A major problem with discoveries leading to Nobel Prizes is we often do not know precisely who made the discovery. In most cases it is not clear as the discoveries are the product of collective effort.

Also Paul Halpern is reconsidering the Nobel Prize in his book review of “Losing the Nobel Prize A Story of Cosmology, Ambition, and the Perils of Science’s Highest Honor” by Brian Keating.

Occluding Keating’s account, however, are his personal beefs about “losing” the Nobel Prize. Unlike the Olympics or marathon races, the Nobel Prize is not a competition between vying players who train for a shot at a trophy. These days, physics has so many researchers and subfields that it is not always clear who and which are in contention.

Those allegations first surfaced when the #MeToo movement hit Sweden last November, and the Stockholm daily Dagens Nyheter reported that the man — whom the newspaper has identified only as “Cultural Profile” — had allegedly sexually assaulted or harassed at least 18 women over the past two decades.

25. Mai 2018, EU-Datenschutz-Grundverordnung DSGVO: Eine Lösung für das Youtube Problem

Selbst wenn man auf seinem Blog keine Werbebanner, kein Google Analytics und nicht mal Cookies verwendet, bleiben trotzdem einige Aufgaben zu erledigen. Wie ist das mit HTTPS? Ab sofort zwingend. Wie ist das mit Akismet? Erstmal abgeschaltet, da Kommentare nicht erlaubt sind. Und das Kontaktformular? Abgeschaltet. Und Impressum? Ergänzt um zeitlimitierte IP Datenspeicherung.
Dann bleibt also noch die Einbindung externer Seiten zu überarbeiten. Dafür gibt es nun eine Änderung im WordPress Theme Header, welche nur den Content zeigt, denn der Leser aktiv anklickt.

Was ist der Grund den Iframe nicht nur zu verstecken, sondern auch noch eine Fake URL zu setzen? Auch ein unsichtbarer iframe kann Daten ziehen und Cookies setzen.

Is the GWAS reporting of p-values highly flawed?

Since the advent of Nature Genetics I wonder why this journal is publishing articles based on significance and not on effect size. Only recently I found an interesting blog about “the smaller the p-value, the higher the likelihood ratio under the alternative vs the null” fallacy

This statement ignores the fact that under low power conditions, 100% of the significant effects will be based on overestimates of the true effect. This is what Gelman’s Type M error is all about.

Prima vista, I can’t find any error in the argument there. The GWAS power is high  for alleles of 5% frequency but what about 1% or 0.1% minor allele frequency? More about type M errors by Andrew Gelman 2016, basically an error of magnitude – claiming with confidence that theta is small in magnitude when it is in fact large or by claiming with confidence that theta is large in magnitude when it is in fact small. The GWAS publication bias is ultimately leading to systematic Type M errors.

Nachrichten aus der evangelikalen Welt

Dass die katholische Kirche jahrelang pädophile Priester geduldet hat, ist erschütternd.

Nun kam mehr beiläufig heraus, dass auch der Evangeliumsrundfunk ERF in Wetzlar über längere Zeit einen pädophilen Mitarbeiter nicht nur gedeckt, sondern sogar befördert hat.  Auch wenn seit heute morgen die damalige Pressemitteilung des ERF über die Ernennung von Markus M. nicht mehr abrufbar ist (nur noch bei pressesprecher.de und idea. de), so wurde vom ERF stolz die Industrieerfahrung von Markus M. bei Coca-Cola und Microsoft hervorgehoben, Motto ist egal, ob man den Menschen den rechten Glauben oder Coca Cola verkauft. Was die Anschuldigungen angeht, ist es nun Sache der Staatsanwaltschaft, ein Ermittlungsverfahren durchzuführen.

Nicht ganz so egal, ist der Umgang des spendenfinanzierten ERF (15 Million jährlich), wenn er zwei langjährige Mitarbeitern in die Kündigung treibt, weil sie ERF interne Vorgänge recherchiert haben.

Vorstandsvorsitzender von ERF Medien ist Jörg Dechert, ein Physiker, der auf pixelpastor.com als Pseudopastor seine moralischen Werturteile verbreitet. Auf idea Nachfrage will er sich allerdings nicht zu dem aktuellen Fall äußern, da es sich um ein laufendes Verfahren handeln würde. Ist die ganze Welt nicht ein laufendes Verfahren? Und ist ihr letzter Blogeintrag nicht etwas zynisch, Herr Dechert: “Selig sind, die da Leid tragen, denn sie sollen getröstet werden”?

Interessant auch das Zitat Dechert in Willow Creek Magazin 3/17 über Bill Hybels “Hier sieht man, wie viel man erreichen kann, wenn man einfach an seiner Überzeugung festhält. Wir brauchen in Deutschland glaubwürdige Organisationen, und Leiter, die das verkörpern und glaubensvoll agieren.” Hybels ist mittlerweile wegen der Anschuldigung sexueller Belästigung zurückgetreten, nachdem er zunächst alles als “flat out lies” bezeichnet hat. Nein, Herr Dechert, solche Organisationen brauchen wir nicht und schon gar nicht solche Leiter.

Wie man sein Versagen als positive Eigenschaft verkauft

Die Mitarbeiterin – eine zweifache Mutter, die seit 1990 beim ERF beschäftigt ist – kann ihre Arbeit „in Kürze“ wieder aufnehmen, teilte der Vorstand von ERF Medien in einer Pressemitteilung am 18. Mai mit. Man habe sich entschieden, die Weiterbeschäftigung der Mitarbeiterin „insbesondere als Zeichen christlicher Versöhnung und als Auftakt für eine interne Aufarbeitung zu sehen“, sagte der Vorstandsvorsitzende Jörg Dechert.

[…] Ein Verhalten außerhalb des Dienstes ist nur dann ein Dienstvergehen, wenn es nach den Umständen des Einzelfalls in besonderem Maße geeignet ist, das Vertrauen in einer für das jeweilige Amt bedeutsamen Weise zu beeinträchtigen.

Schön, diese Trennung von amtlichem und privatem Handeln.

How to drop your Facebook account and create your own timeline with RSS

After leaving Researchgate and Linkedin earlier – never used Instagram and Strava – I am thinking now how to delete also the Facebook account without loosing all my “friends”.

There seems to be a nice solution as I can add any Facebook account to my RSS feed in Miniflux using RSS bridge. This is dead easy, just enter the username and add the resulting feed to the reader.

There is only one downside: All Facebook accounts  (and groups!) need to make their content public available and not just to Facebook and Cambridge Analytica marketing departments.
The fake privacy as well as the assumed exclusivity of Facebook contacts is a built-in design cheat right from the beginning of the social media.
