The official end of academic Twitter

Twitter was the #1 information source during COVID times but it is now officially declared dead in a new  preprint “The Failed Migration of Academic Twitter“.

Utilizing publicly available user account data, we track the posting activity of academics on Mastodon over a one year period. Our analyses reveal significant challenges sustaining user engagement on Mastodon due to its decentralized structure as well as competition from other platforms such as Bluesky and Threads. The movement lost momentum after an initial surge of en- thusiasm as most users did not maintain their activity levels, and those who did faced lower levels of engagement compared to Twitter.

While the paper isn’t particular well designed – I would expect some Sankey plots showing the activity movement like those found after elections – the main message is clear. The paper summary also reflects my own experience as I am writing now only occasionally at my blog while my Twitter, Mastodon and Bluesky accounts are left in an orphan state.

Leider funktionieren die Onleihe Screenshots über GoFullPage in Brave nicht so schön wie in Chrome da zusätzliche CSS Elemente von Onleihe stören . Mit drei Regeln im Inhaltsfilter

kann man sie aber ausblenden. Die Zoom Buttons sind zwar dann auch weg aber der Zoom funktioniert weiter mit CRTL+ bzw CTRL-.

Weniger bekannt ist sein Kopfstand vor der Anklagebank aus demselben Anlass, mit der nachgelieferten Begründung: „Sie haben ja nicht gesagt, wie herum ich aufstehen soll.“

Die Recherche in Zeitungen vor 1945 wird sich dramatisch verbessern, so Michael Knoche

Mit einem Mal lassen sich historische Sachverhalte ermitteln, die früher entweder gar nicht – weil das Blättern in Zeitungen der Suche nach einer Nadel im Heuhaufen glich – oder in dieser Breite nicht möglich war. Kein Mensch konnte Hunderte von Zeitungen im Original auf eine Fragestellung auswerten, allein schon wegen des fragilen Erhaltungszustands der meisten Blätter.

Wissenschaftsfreiheit in Berlin

Die Wissenschaftsfreiheit sei gefährdet, so das Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung (WZB) 2024

Aus verschiedenen Einrichtungen sei zu hören, dass Einladungen an Gäste und Referenten wegen deren politischen Positionen oder deren Identität zurückgezogen wurden.

Politik mischt sich immer mehr auch in die universitäre Selbstverwaltung ein – so zuletzt auch bei der FU Präsidentin Rauch.

Bei der Berliner CDU stieß die Entscheidung Rauchs, am Amt der TU-Präsidentin festzuhalten, auf scharfe Kritik. CDU-Generalsekretärin Ottilie Klein erneuerte am Donnerstag in der rbb24 Abendschau ihre Rücktrittsforderung.

Günter M. Ziegler, Präsident der Freien Universität, sagte dem Tagesspiegel, insgesamt vermisse er einen „adäquaten Umgang“ der Ministerin mit den Protesten und der heiklen und schwierigen Lage der Universitäten.

Auslöser war der geplante Auftritt der Doktorandin Marie-Luise Vollbrecht zunächst bei der Langen Nacht der Wissenschaften am 2. Juli – und die Absage durch die Hochschulleitung. In dem nun nachgeholten, zuvor aber auch bereits im Internet veröffentlichten Vortrag referiert die Biologin darüber, dass es – so die von ihr vermittelte Lehrmeinung ihres Fachs – nur zwei Geschlechter gibt.

Some observations about science administration

I’ve witnessed an ongoing expansion of science administration personnel at local, national, and international levels. What’s more concerning is that this administration is becoming increasingly disconnected from the day-to-day realities at the laboratory bench. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as Parkinson’s Law, first elucidated 1955 by C. Northcote Parkinson (not to be confused with James Parkinson).

In summary, employees like to talk to each other in the administration office, they want more subordinates (and not competitors from the lab) while even little work is expanded to fill the time available for its completion.

After Parkinson, the annual increase in staff, regardless of variations in workload, ranges from 5.2% to 6.6%. He even goes so far as to claim that core tasks could be completely eliminated without the administration shrinking as a result.

Parkinson formulated this in the 1950s. In modern administrations, new terms have been introduced, such as Controlling, New Management Models, business indicators, etc. Often, the proportion of staff in these areas of work increases, while for the actual core tasks, staff remains stagnant or even decreases.

How to integrate wordpress in another website

In another website constructed more than a decade ago, I integrated WordPress pages just as iframe .This was quite common at that time but not very elegant as all the formatting had to be adjusted to the parent site for a coherent view. When revising the website last week I have chosen a radical different approach by completely silencing the WP output using a plugin

A scientific myth is not produced by accident or error. It requires effort. “To qualify as a myth, a false claim should be persistent and widespread,” Heilbron said in a 2014 conference talk. “It should have a plausible and assignable reason for its endurance, and immediate cultural relevance,” he noted. “Although erroneous or fabulous, such myths are not entirely wrong, and their exaggerations bring out aspects of a situation, relationship or project that might otherwise be ignored.”
